Ziku Pagoda, built in the Qing Dynasty, stands as a testament to the reverence for the written word. The name “Ziku” itself translates to “repository of words”. Local people believed words carried a sacred essence. They meticulously gathered discarded written materials, refusing to simply throw them away. In 1852, the Ziku Pagoda was erected to provide a dedicated space for the ceremonial burning of these precious words. The pagoda’s intricate carvings depict scenes from “The Legend of White Snake”, a popular folktale. These carvings add a layer of cultural significance to the structure, intertwining local beliefs and artistic expression. The pagoda rises 15 meters high, overlooking Gingko Square. Five millennium-old gingko trees grace this square, their towering presence a complement to the Ziku Pagoda.
