“Another temple” you might think. But Myouseiji Temple holds secrets beyond its walls. It whispers tales of faith and community.
Myouseiji Temple is a Nichiren sect temple. Many temples enshrine the Myoken Bodhisattva. This is because the founder Nichiren Daishonin had a deep connection with this Bodhisattva.
The Chiba clan revered the Myoken Bodhisattva. They possessed vast lands during the medieval period. Their devotion is well known. The Hokushin Itto-ryu school of swordsmanship drew its name from this belief. The Kujukuri region also held strong Myoken beliefs. Its name may originate from the North Star.
Many temples in the Kansai region also honor the Myoken Bodhisattva. Nōse Myoken is a hallowed part of the Jinyokuji Temple.
During the early Meiji era, many Bodhisattvas were altered. They were changed into Shinto shrines amidst anti-Buddhist movements.
Myouseiji Temple’s origins are linked to the Kawachi Isshin Ko. However the true nature of the Kawachi Isshin Ko remains unclear. What we do know is that in the 加納村 at the end of the Edo period. This 法華 faith group built Myoken-do hall here.

When you visit Myouseiji Temple you may rest. There is a relaxation space provided.
When offering incense at the altar the Nichiren sect has customs. Usually one to three sticks of incense are lit. For one stick place it in the center of the incense burner. With two sticks put one closer to you. The other goes closer to the Buddhist altar. If using three sticks place one near you. Then place the remaining two closer to the altar.
There are twelve daily sutras recited in the Nichiren sect.
Japanese Buddhist traditions include thirteen sects. Nichiren is one of them. Nichiren established it during the Kamakura period. The Lotus Sutra contains the teachings of Shakyamuni. It serves as the main scripture. The head temple of the Nichiren sect is Kuonji Temple on Minobu Mountain. Since it is a single sect, there are no sub-sects.
