Whispers of ancient trees and fallen samurai fill the air here at Myokoku-ji Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a place where history breathes. Established in 1592 by Nichiko Shonin Myokoku-ji has witnessed centuries of change. Its buildings have risen and fallen three times. Once consumed by the flames of war during the Osaka Summer War in 1615 it was rebuilt in 1628. World War II brought further destruction. Today’s structures stand as a testament to resilience.

But Myokoku-ji is more than bricks and mortar. It holds a sacred cycad a living legend. This ancient tree over 1100 years old once resided at Azuchi Castle. Oda Nobunaga had it moved. Yet every night a ghostly voice pleaded for its return to Myokoku-ji. The tree’s response to being cut down was so terrifying that even Nobunaga returned it. Nichiko Shonin’s prayers appeased the tree’s spirit. A guardian god appeared granting boons of ease in childbirth freedom from hardship and happiness to the poor.

This temple also bears witness to a darker chapter. The Sakai Incident of 1868 unfolded here. A clash between French sailors and Tosa clan samurai led to bloodshed. Thirteen samurai died. Eleven performed seppuku right here in front of Myokoku-ji. Their sacrifice a stark reminder of a turbulent past. Their graves however lie elsewhere. Imperial decree forbade burial on temple grounds.

Myokoku-ji Temple stands as a silent observer of centuries. A place where the whispers of a sacred cycad and the cries of fallen samurai intertwine. This is a place of faith resilience and profound historical weight. A place you won’t soon forget.
