Peaceful serenity surrounds Miaoying Temple. This ancient temple whispers tales of emperors and scholars. It stands as a testament to centuries of faith. Its history is rich and layered.
Miaoying Temple’s construction began during the Qing Dynasty. It’s nestled in the western part of Beijing near Jade Spring Hill. The temple is also known as the “Reclining Seat” due to its layout. It’s a three-courtyard complex. The front courtyard features a sloping roof. The design is intricate and detailed. The rear courtyard boasts three halls. Each hall is flanked by three rooms. The temple is shaded by ancient cypress trees. It exudes an atmosphere of quiet contemplation.
A fascinating anecdote connects Miaoying Temple to Emperor Qianlong. While traveling near the temple he saw the brilliant red sun. A mystical cloud appeared nearby. The scene was bathed in golden light. Qianlong exclaimed “Wonderful cloud wonderful cloud!” The monks interpreted this as a divine sign. They named the temple Miaoying Temple meaning “Temple of Marvelous Response”.
In the 18th century a high-ranking official named Xilai lived near the temple. He was a scholar. He also held official positions in the capital. Despite his busy life he often retreated to Miaoying Temple. Xilai found solace in the temple’s calm environment. He spent nearly twenty years visiting Miaoying Temple. He wrote a couplet which is still remembered today. It reflects the peace he found within its walls.
Later Miaoying Temple was gifted to a prominent official. The temple underwent renovations. It served as a family residence for decades. Eventually it changed hands. The new owner removed Buddhist imagery. He converted parts of the temple for other uses. He even changed the name to Shifu. This name meant “Stone Residence”. He removed the original stone inscription. He replaced it with one reading Shifu.
Despite these changes Miaoying Temple persevered. It survived various changes throughout the centuries. In 2001 it was designated a key cultural relic. Renovations restored the temple to its former glory. Today Miaoying Temple stands as a peaceful refuge. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. It beckons visitors to experience its tranquil beauty. The temple continues to capture the hearts of those who seek serenity and reflection.
