Could these stones tell a tale? Right here, before us stands the 太秦 熱田神社 Stele. It marks a spot steeped in history. It connects us to ancient beliefs.

The 太秦 熱田神社 Stele stands within the grounds of the 熱田神社. This shrine is the guardian deity of 太秦. The enshrined deity is Nihon武尊 or Yamato Takeru.

Long ago, 太秦 lacked a patron god. Near the end of the Muromachi period, something changed. A master builder from the Ishiyama Honganji Temple arrived. He spoke of the Atsuta Shrine in his home province. He praised its deity. The people of 太秦 were moved. They decided to invite the spirit of Atsuta to be their guardian. Thus, the 熱田神社 became the heart of 太秦.

From the shrine grounds, ancient tiles have emerged. Massive stones used for the base can be seen. The area hints at an ancient temple site. This site is known as the 太秦廃寺 Temple Ruins.

Excavated artifacts include round tiles with double circles and flat tiles with Tang grass patterns. These date back to the late Nara to early Heian periods.

The true nature of the 太秦廃寺 Temple Ruins remains unclear. Some believe it may be related to the “Kawai 秦寺” mentioned in the “Koryuji Temple Branch Temple Records”.

太秦 has been inhabited for a long time. Around 1800 years ago, during the Yayoi period, a large settlement thrived. The 太秦 ancient tomb group may hold the tombs of the 秦氏 clan. This clan greatly influenced ancient Japanese history.

In 1962, during earthworks east of the shrine, a rare deer head ornament was found.

Imagine the people who walked here centuries ago. They prayed to their gods. They built temples. They shaped the land. The 太秦 熱田神社 Stele stands as a silent witness. It links us to their world.

Let us take a moment to reflect. This place is more than just stone. It is a story etched in time. It whispers of faith, history and community. It connects us to the past.
