Gazing at the Eshima Ohashi Bridge, it’s easy to see why it’s called the “craziest bridge in the world”. From the right angle, the bridge appears to ascend almost vertically into the sky. The Eshima Ohashi Bridge spans Lake Nakaumi, connecting Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture and Matsue in Shimane Prefecture. Completed in 2004, this rigid-frame bridge replaced the older Nakaura Watergate. The previous structure had a drawbridge that frequently caused traffic delays. Larger vehicles also couldn’t cross it. Now, the Eshima Ohashi Bridge facilitates smoother transportation, with its 44.7-meter height allowing large ships to pass underneath. While photos make the bridge appear terrifyingly steep, the gradient is actually 6.1% on the Matsue side and 5.1% on the Tottori side. This dramatic appearance is a clever optical illusion, created by photographers using telephoto lenses from a distance. The convenience store at the intersection on the Shimane side is a great spot to take these dramatic photos. For a different perspective, walk or cycle to the bridge’s center. From there, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Nakaumi and even Mt. Daisen on a clear day. Free telescopes and binoculars are available for visitors to enhance their viewing experience.
