“My sleeve is soaked with dew formed by the tears I shed recalling Kyoto.” Those words, penned by Sugawara Michizane, echo through time and bring us to Tsuyu no Tenjinja. This shrine stands as a testament to love, scholarship, and the enduring power of Shinto.

Tsuyu no Tenjinja has a rich history spanning over 1,300 years. Originally, it honored the god Sumiyoshi Sumuchisone. But its identity transformed in the 10th century, after Sugawara Michizane’s visit. Exiled and heartbroken, his poem about the dew became the shrine’s namesake.

The shrine gained its greatest fame from a tragic tale. Ohatsu, a prostitute, and Tokubei, a soy sauce store owner, shared a forbidden love. Like Romeo and Juliet, their story ended in a double suicide in the forest near the shrine. This cemented Tsuyu no Tenjinja’s place as a haven for lovers. It became also known as Ohatsu Tenjin in memory of Ohatsu.

Look around you. Even amidst Umeda’s skyscrapers and bustling streets, Tsuyu no Tenjinja offers peace. It stands as a reminder that even in the most chaotic environments, love and faith can persist.

Notice the ema. These wooden boards hold the wishes of visitors. Many are heart-shaped, depicting Ohatsu and Tokubei. People inscribe their hopes for love and lasting relationships on them. You can purchase orthodox charms and special charms for couples here.

Consider the layers of history within these grounds. Deities are worshipped here. People trace back history here. The future of marriage is prayed for here. All three coexist within the walls of Tsuyu no Tenjinja.

Before you stands not just a shrine, but a cultural touchstone. It embodies Osaka’s history. It celebrates love’s enduring power. May your visit here deepen your appreciation for the interwoven threads of faith, history, and human connection that make Tsuyu no Tenjinja so special.
