Did you know that the Tenrikyo Church Headquarters is not in Osaka? It’s actually located in Tenri Nara. But our story today touches on its vast influence. This grand institution profoundly impacted Tenri City’s development. It’s a story of faith ambition and urban planning.
Imagine a small village in rural Nara. This village slowly grew to encompass the Tenrikyo Church Headquarters. It all started with Oyasama Miki’s teachings. Her followers flocked to her residence. This residence was considered the Jiba the birthplace of humankind.
The area around the Jiba transformed. Dedicated followers built a popular international school. This school later became Tenri University. They also built the Tenri Central Library. This attracted even more people to the area.
Tenrikyo’s Second Shinbashira Shōzen Nakayama had a grand vision. He wanted to create a massive construction project. This project would be a testament to Oyasama’s followers’ loyalty. He commissioned the architect Yoshikazu Uchida. Uchida created a plan for ten buildings around Oyasama’s Residence.
But then came a prophecy. Oyasama had foreseen the area filling with houses. She predicted the divine Residence would become 872 meters square. This prophecy inspired a new plan. The new plan arranged buildings in a large square. This left open space around Oyasama’s Residence. This was the start of the oyasato-yakata.
The oyasato-yakata is an enormous complex. It includes Tenri University Tenri Hospital and Tenri Seminary. It also has dormitories and a Besseki Lecture Hall. Even today construction continues. Archaeologists have discovered prehistoric artifacts during the construction.
The oyasato-yakata’s construction is a spiritual practice. It’s a physical embodiment of the Tenrikyo belief in a Joyous Life. The entire Tenrikyo community participated. Volunteers helped with construction. Professors planned future wings.
The yakata’s architecture is unique. It blends Western and Japanese styles. It uses reinforced walls multiple stories and balconies. The design is walkable and visually appealing. It also offers stunning views from Oyasama’s gravesite.
