Journey back to 1297. Picture a small stone bridge arching over a forgotten river, the old Harigawa River. This bridge, my friends, was no ordinary crossing. It was crafted from a remarkable stone. This stone would later become the heart of Tennoji Jizoson.

Tennoji Jizoson, nestled in the heart of Osaka, is more than just a place of worship. It’s a tangible link to the past. It houses Osaka’s oldest stone Buddhist image. This weathered figure, known as the Jizo Bosatsu, silently observes the passage of time.

The Jizo statue within Tennoji Jizoson has a gentle, serene expression. It holds a shakujo, a staff with rings, in its right hand. Its left hand cradles a wish-fulfilling jewel, a “hoju”. The statue’s robes flow gracefully from its shoulders to its feet. It whispers of the craftsmanship of the Kamakura period.

The very stone the Jizo is carved from was rediscovered in the Edo period. During river renovations, workers unearthed this ancient bridge stone. They recognized its sacred significance and ensured its preservation. It’s said to bring good fortune and protection to those who visit. The original bridge was part of a thriving new development area. This area, known as Tennoji Shinden, was built around the old Nagara River, now the Nagase River. Today, Tennoji Jizoson stands along Namba Street. This street follows the course of the former Nagara River. It serves as a quiet reminder of the area’s rich history.

Tennoji Jizoson is also intriguing because of its location near a lost temple. The Kyoganji Temple, or Gojo Palace, stood nearby in the Kamakura period. It adds another layer of historical intrigue to this unassuming site.
