In 1904, a modest structure took shape in Dongguantou Village. This was the beginning of the 天主教北京教区东管头天主堂. Today, we stand before its modern incarnation. The original building served the local Catholic community for decades. It witnessed history unfold, from the final years of the Qing Dynasty to the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. In 1958, religious activities ceased. The building was repurposed, first as a primary school and later for other uses. After the Cultural Revolution, the Catholic community reclaimed their space. In 1985, the church was returned. Religious services resumed in 1986. A dedicated priest from the Beijing diocese traveled to Dongguantou Village every Sunday. He brought the sacrament to the approximately 500 local Catholics. The old building, having served its community faithfully, was demolished in 1991. A new church arose in its place. This newer structure, completed in 1992, is 20 meters long and 8 meters wide. Bishop Fu Tieshan presided over the opening ceremony on December 8, 1992. He officially named it “Tianzhu Quan Neng Tang,” or “Church of the Almighty Lord.” The current building has a very distinctive architectural style. The proportions of the facade are quite symmetrical. The two upward-curving cornices on either side of the roof give the impression of wings about to take flight. This unique design sets the 天主教北京教区东管头天主堂 apart from other churches in Beijing. It stands as a testament to the resilience of faith. It also reflects the evolving architectural landscape of China.
