Centuries ago, a teahouse stood on the bustling Kishin-kaido Road. This very spot, now known as Tenka Chaya Ato, held a special significance. Tenka Chaya Ato translates to “ruins of the teahouse under heaven”. Let’s delve into its captivating history. Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a prominent figure, frequented this teahouse during his travels to Ibaraki Shrine or his administrative office. He enjoyed the tea made with spring water from the premises. So impressed was he with the taste, that he named the spring “Osore-no-mizu,” meaning “water of awe”. He even bestowed a vermilion seal upon the owner, a token of his appreciation. This act elevated the teahouse’s status. It became known as Tenka Chaya, or the “teahouse under heaven”. The original teahouse, along with other structures on the expansive 5,000-square-meter site, was tragically destroyed during the Osaka Air Raids of 1945. Today, a stone monument and statue of Sanmon Taiheisan, remnants of the past, stand as reminders of the teahouse’s legacy. Interestingly, a Hokora, a small shrine, is located near the ruins. It enshrines three dragon deities: Byakusetsu Ryujin, the guardian of women, Byakusen Suio, protector of men, and Hakuryu Daimyojin, the marriage deity. Locals believe that praying at this Hokora brings various benefits, from finding love and securing marriage to improving marital harmony, business prosperity, and warding off fires and thunderstorms. The Hokora itself remains a mystery, its origins unknown. However, one custom stands out. Instead of coins, worshippers offer folded paper money as a sign of respect to the dragon deities. Tenka Chaya Ato, more than just historical ruins, whispers tales of powerful figures, delicious tea, and divine blessings. It offers a glimpse into Osaka’s rich past, blending history, culture, and a touch of mystique.
