“1937: a year etched in the stones of Tian Xia Di Yi Qiao,” our guide began, his voice echoing the solemnity of the memorial before us. Tian Xia Di Yi Qiao, the “First Bridge Under Heaven,” isn’t a bridge in the conventional sense. It’s a poignant nine-tiered pagoda, a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Fourth Route Army, part of the National Revolutionary Army. Built in 1939, the pagoda originally overlooked rows of meticulously arranged graves, a stark reminder of the sacrifices made during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The pagoda itself stands 38 meters tall, a solemn beacon against the sky. Its square base and tapered top are crafted from sturdy granite, while the interior reveals a reinforced concrete structure. The front facade proudly displays the inscription “Memorial Pagoda to the Fallen Heroes of the Fourth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army,” a testament to their bravery. The year “1939,” inscribed below, marks its completion, a silent witness to a tumultuous era. What many don’t realize is that Tian Xia Di Yi Qiao stands as a lonely sentinel. The original cemetery surrounding it, once a place of reverence, was tragically desecrated during the Cultural Revolution. Graves were destroyed, remains scattered, and even the pagoda’s inscription and Nationalist Party emblem were defaced. Only a few scattered tombstones remained, whispering stories of forgotten heroes. However, the spirit of remembrance couldn’t be extinguished. In 1986, the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government restored the pagoda, painstakingly repairing the inscription and emblem. This act of restoration ensured that Tian Xia Di Yi Qiao would continue to honor the memory of those who gave their lives for their country. Today, it stands not only as a tribute to the fallen, but also as a symbol of resilience and the enduring power of remembrance.
