Originally, the Veterinary Training Institute marked an early beginning. It was founded in 1883. This institute later became part of Osaka Prefecture University. Over time, other colleges joined. These included Osaka Women’s University and Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing. This unification formed Osaka Prefecture University in 2005.
In April 2022, Osaka Prefecture University merged with Osaka City University. This created Osaka Metropolitan University. Still, the legacy of Osaka Prefecture University lives on through its graduate school I-site.
