In 1903, Osaka Prefectural Shijonawate High School began as the ninth prefectural middle school. It’s been shaping young minds ever since. Originally called “Shijonawate Middle School”, the school holds a significant place in the community. The name itself reflects the local connection to Kusunoki Masashige. A section related to him is nearby. His principles subtly influence the school’s philosophy. The school initially focused on general education. In 2011, things shifted. It introduced a Liberal Arts course and adopted a new entrance exam system. A key moment in the school’s history was the post-war educational reform of 1948. This reform solidified its position as Osaka Prefectural Shijonawate High School. The school became co-educational through an exchange program with Osaka Prefectural Neyagawate High School. This marked a significant change, reflecting the growing diversity of the region. The main building, with its distinct architectural style, became a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2005. Osaka Prefectural Shijonawate High School encourages “independence, autonomy, and freedom”. Students are allowed to wear casual clothes instead of uniforms. Mobile phones are also permitted, fostering a relaxed yet focused learning environment. The school boasts a deviation value of 70. It consistently sends graduates to top universities. Its academic rigor is a point of pride. Osaka Prefectural Shijonawate High School offers individual guidance and support. Students participate in small group classes to refine their understanding and enhance their communication skills. The focus on English conversation is evident. They conduct classes using electronic whiteboards and tablets. All first-year Liberal Arts students participate in two-week science research projects. This unique program introduces them to essential scientific concepts. Students then conduct independent research, culminating in presentations of their findings. Osaka Prefectural Shijonawate High School is also deeply involved in international exchange programs. They offer a study trip to Taiwan. Students get a chance to interact with local high school and university students. They also have a sister school relationship with Bandaberg State High School in Queensland, Australia. They offer the opportunity to experience different cultures and strengthen their English communication skills.
