In 1936, Osaka City established Takakura Elementary School. It was initially named Akagawa Island Regular Elementary School. Why the “island” moniker? Because it was located in the then-Akagawa Town, within the broader Higashiyodogawa Ward of Osaka. Takakura Elementary wasn’t always known by its current name. It has gone through several transformations, reflecting the changing times and the area’s administrative reorganizations. The original name, Akagawa Island Regular Elementary School, resonated with the local identity. In 1941, due to the National School Ordinance, it became Osaka City Akagawa National School. Then, a mere three years later in 1944, after a town name change, it was christened Osaka City Takakura National School. The tumultuous years of World War II left their mark on Takakura Elementary. In 1944, as the war intensified, a group of fifth and sixth-grade students and their teachers were evacuated to safer locations in Ishikawa Prefecture. Tragically, in 1945, the school was destroyed during the third Osaka air raid. Only the steel frame remained. A bomb even landed on the school grounds, leaving a gaping hole as a grim reminder of the war’s devastation. Finally, after the war, with the educational reforms of 1947, it was renamed Takakura Elementary School of Osaka City, the name it carries today. Fast forward to the 1970s and 1980s. Large-scale housing developments sprang up around the school, leading to a surge in student numbers. To accommodate the growing population, part of Takakura Elementary’s district was separated in 1981. This led to the establishment of Osaka City Tomogaura Elementary School. So, as you stand before Takakura Elementary today, remember, you’re not just looking at a school. You’re witnessing a resilient institution. It has weathered name changes, war, and population booms, standing as a testament to the enduring spirit of Osaka and its community.
