In 1978, amidst a boom in local children, Osaka City Kawanakajima Higashi Elementary School first opened its doors. This school, known locally as Ōsaka-shiritsu Sekime Higashi Shōgakkō, stands as a testament to the changing needs of this vibrant city. The story of Kawanakajima Higashi Elementary School is intertwined with that of its parent school, Kawanakajima Elementary. By the 1970s, Kawanakajima Elementary had become overcrowded, with over 1,500 students. This overcrowding spurred the need for a new school. Thus, Kawanakajima Higashi Elementary was established to alleviate the burden and provide a more manageable learning environment. Interestingly, there’s a small quirk in the school’s history. For a brief period in 1958, the current Sumiyoshi Elementary School was also known as Osaka City Kawanakajima Higashi Elementary School. This temporary name overlap adds a layer of intrigue to our school’s story. Today, Kawanakajima Higashi Elementary serves the children of Osaka’s Higashi Ward. The school’s attendance zone includes parts of Sekime 1-chōme, Sekime 2 and 4-chōme, and a section of Imakufunishi 6-chōme. Graduates typically continue their education at Osaka City Tsubame Junior High School. As you stand here, imagine the generations of students who have walked these halls.
