How about a story that begins in 1875? That is when the roots of Osaka Municipal Miyakojima Elementary School took hold. It began as Tomishima Elementary School. It was the third district and fourth school.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine Osaka then. It was a place of change.
Miyakojima Elementary School has seen many changes. It has evolved greatly over the years.
In 1898, Miyakojima Village joined Osaka City. The school’s name changed. It became Osaka Miyakojima Ordinary Elementary School.
The school moved to its current location in 1916. In 1922, a higher elementary division was added. Its name then became Osaka Miyakojima Ordinary Higher Elementary School.
Later in 1927, Miyakojima Second Ordinary Elementary School separated. This is now Osaka Municipal Nakano Elementary School. Our school was renamed Osaka Miyakojima First Ordinary Higher Elementary School.
Typhoon Muroto hit in 1934. The school building was damaged.
In 1941, a national school order came. The name changed to Osaka Miyakojima National School.
In 1942, Osaka Higashi-Miyakojima National School separated. That school is now Osaka Municipal Higashi-Miyakojima Elementary School.
World War II brought devastation. Air raids in 1945 destroyed the school building.
In 1946, it temporarily closed. It merged with Osaka Nakano National School. That school became Osaka Municipal Nakano Elementary School.
The community rebuilt. In 1951, the school reopened at the current site. It was a branch of Osaka Municipal Nakano Elementary School. The name Osaka Municipal Miyakojima Elementary School was revived.
In 1954, Higashi-Miyakojima Elementary School reopened. It was a branch of Miyakojima Elementary School.
In 1957, Higashi-Miyakojima Elementary School became independent again.
Today, Osaka Municipal Miyakojima Elementary School stands proud. It is a testament to resilience. It is a place of learning for the children of Miyakojima. It provides education within the Miyakojima Ward of Osaka City. The school continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students. It has a rich history that shapes its future. The graduates progress to Osaka Municipal Miyakojima Junior High School.
