Founded in 1874 Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Elementary School has a rich history. It began as Nishi-Naka Ward Second Elementary School within Tennoji Temple grounds. The school’s name changed many times reflecting the area’s development. In 1918 it became Sumiyoshi Public Elementary School. By 1950 it was a large school with over 2000 students. Growth led to the creation of Sumiyoshi South Elementary School and Osaka City Sumiyoshi Daido South Elementary School in the 1980s. Sumiyoshi Elementary School’s history is marked by challenges. In 1933 a fire destroyed the school buildings. A strong windstorm damaged buildings in 1934. World War II brought further disruption. The school was forced to relocate. Air raids completely destroyed buildings in 1945. Despite these setbacks Sumiyoshi Elementary School persevered. It reflects Osaka’s growth and resilience. The school’s long history shows the importance of education. Each generation has contributed to its legacy. The current students continue a proud tradition. They carry on the spirit of their predecessors. The school’s story is one of adaptation change and enduring strength. It stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to learning. This is Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Elementary School a place of learning and history. A place where generations have learned and grown.
