Osaka’s Toyosaki Higashi Elementary School has witnessed a lot of history. Established in 1917, this public elementary school, affectionately known as “Toyohic”, stands as a testament to the resilience of the community. Originally called the Nishinari District Toyosaki Fourth Common Elementary School, it was founded to accommodate the rapidly growing population of children in the area. In 1925, Toyosaki village was incorporated into Osaka City. The school’s name was then changed to Osaka City Toyosaki Fourth Common Elementary School. Tragedy struck in 1934. The Great Kanto Earthquake brought devastating winds and rain, causing the wooden school building to collapse. Sadly, 19 children lost their lives. Osaka City Toyosaki Higashi Elementary School carries the weight of this heartbreaking event in its history. During World War II, like many schools, Toyosaki Higashi Elementary School was affected. In 1941, it was renamed Osaka City Toyosaki East National School, reflecting the nationalistic fervor of the times. Students were evacuated to Kyoto Prefecture for safety in 1944. In 1946, the school temporarily closed after merging with Osaka City Toyonaka National School due to war damage. It reopened in 1947 after education reforms, reclaiming its name as Osaka City Toyosaki Higashi Elementary School. In a poignant turn of events, Toyonaka Elementary School was later revived and separated in 1954. Even in recent times, Toyosaki Higashi Elementary School has faced adversity. In 1970, a gas explosion near the school tragically killed five students and injured ten more. The school has been rebuilt and renovated over the years, standing as a symbol of the community’s commitment to education.
