In 1956, Osaka City established the Nishiikuno Elementary School. This school, known locally as 大阪市立西生野小学校, played a vital role in the community. It provided education to generations of children in the Ikuno Ward of Osaka. Originally, Nishiikuno Elementary was a branch of Ikuno Elementary. As the population grew, the need for a separate school became clear. In 1956, it finally gained its independence. The school’s motto encouraged children to be “bright, strong, and thoughtful”. Sadly, Nishiikuno Elementary closed its doors in March 2022. It merged with four other local schools. They formed the Osaka City Obligatory Education School Ikuno Mirai Gakuen. Though its physical presence is gone, the legacy of Nishiikuno Elementary lives on. Its story is interwoven with the history of Osaka’s Ikuno Ward.
