Osaka Municipal Shibakita Elementary School first opened in 1922. It was initially named Osaka Municipal Sumiyoshi 6th Regular Elementary School. The opening ceremony took place on May 11 1922. This date is still celebrated as the school’s founding day.
In 1925, a higher elementary course was added. The school’s name changed to Osaka Municipal Sumiyoshi 6th Regular Higher Elementary School. Tragedy struck in 1930. A fire completely destroyed the wooden school building.
In 1941 the school’s name changed again. It became Osaka Municipal Shibakita National School. This was due to the National School Order. As World War II intensified, Osaka’s schoolchildren faced evacuation.
In 1944, students from Shibakita National School evacuated to Shiga Prefecture. They were sent to Hayasaki Village and Takesheng Village. War damage led to further changes. In 1946, Tenma National School was integrated with Shibakita.
In 1947, educational reforms led to the final name change. The school became Osaka Municipal Shibakita Elementary School. In 1951, there were changes to the school district. Part of the former Tenma School grounds became part of Horikawa Elementary School.
The school has continued to evolve with the times. In 1992, a life-long learning room was established. A special needs guidance classroom was set up in 1993. Today, Osaka Municipal Shibakita Elementary School continues its mission. It provides education to the children of Osaka’s Kita district. It’s located about 300 meters southwest of Tenjinbashisuji 6-chome Station. This station is served by the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line and Sakaisuji Line. It is also served by the Hankyu Senri Line.
