Let’s delve into the history and significance of this educational institution. The school’s story began in 1915. It started as a branch classroom of Higashinari郡 Tsuruhashi Normal School.
In 1918 it became an independent school named Higashinari郡 Tsuruhashi Second Normal School. The name evolved as the local area changed. In 1925 Tsuruhashi was incorporated into Osaka City. The school then became Osaka City Tsuruhashi Second Normal School.
During the reforms of 1941 it was renamed Osaka Municipal Seiko National School. Finally in 1947 after further educational reforms it gained its current name. It is now called Osaka Municipal Seiko Elementary School.
The name “Seiko” is not a place name. It comes from the Seiko Bridge. This bridge was near the school. It was a path for students. The name “Seiko Bridge” meant something special. It was hoped that children crossing it would become wise like sages.
The bridge is gone now. It is buried. However its name lives on in the school.
In 1934 a typhoon caused major damage. The school building collapsed. Tragically 22 children died. One instructor and one guardian also perished. Fifty-nine students and two teachers were injured.
During the Pacific War things changed again. In 1944 many children were evacuated. Students from Seiko National School went to Fukui Prefecture. They stayed in Fukui City and Mishima-gun. Sadly in July 1945 Fukui was bombed. The school lost its accommodation. Thankfully no students or staff were hurt.
Osaka Municipal Seiko Elementary School has a long history. It adapted to many changes. The school celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018.
