“What could this school possibly offer?” some new families wonder. Let’s explore Osaka Municipal Ikutama Elementary School. This school is in Osaka’s Tennoji Ward. It stands as a beacon of education. It has a rich history. The school’s story is woven into the very fabric of Osaka.

Osaka Municipal Ikutama Elementary School’s history began in 1875. It was initially known as the Fifth District First Elementary School Second School. This marked the start of its long journey. Over the years the school has seen many changes. Its name evolved reflecting shifts in the local area and educational reforms.

In 1921 the school experienced a significant split. It divided into Osaka Municipal Higashihirano First Ordinary Higher Elementary School and Osaka Municipal Higashihirano Second Elementary School. Later in 1925, the Osaka Municipal Higashihirano Third Ordinary Elementary School was separated.

Tragedy struck in 1945 during the Great Osaka Air Raid. The wooden school building was destroyed by fire. The graduation ceremony had to be cancelled. Despite the devastation the school persevered.

After World War II the school faced potential closure. However it was saved. In 1947 due to educational reforms it officially became Osaka Municipal Ikutama Elementary School.

A unique chapter in the school’s history involves a gift of new-born larvae. PTA members wanted to show city children new-born larvae. They contacted Kaho Elementary School in Shiga Prefecture. Children from that school collected larvae. They gifted them to Ikutama Elementary School. This led to several years of exchange between the two schools.

Today Osaka Municipal Ikutama Elementary School continues to thrive. The school is located near Osaka Uehommachi Station and Tanimachi 9-chome Station. Its location is in an area rich in temples. The school actively promotes cross-age group activities. This fosters a strong sense of community. The school also collaborates with local Noh instructors. They conduct parent-child Noh experiences. This helps children experience traditional arts.

Osaka Municipal Ikutama Elementary School has a long history. It has overcome challenges. It continues to provide education. It enriches the lives of its students.
