“What trials and triumphs has this school seen?” I wonder. Today we explore Osaka Municipal Baiko Elementary School. This school has a rich history. It reflects the resilience of the community.
Osaka Municipal Baiko Elementary School first opened in 1925. It was initially a branch of Osaka Municipal Shikashima Elementary School. The school’s name is written as 大阪市立梅香小学校.
Tragedy struck early. In 1934 a typhoon caused flooding. The school building was submerged. Staff and students were safe.
During World War II, the school faced more hardship. In 1945, air raids destroyed the wooden school building. Only the iron frame remained. It was used as housing for war victims. Baiko Elementary School merged with other schools. It became a休校 or temporary closed school.
But the story does not end in despair. The community rebuilt Baiko Elementary. In 1950, a new iron school building was constructed. At that time, the building was used as Osaka Municipal Baiko Junior High School. In 1955, Baiko Elementary School reopened. It was a symbol of hope.
Baiko Elementary has celebrated many milestones. The school marked its 50th anniversary in 1975. It also celebrated the 20th anniversary of its reopening. In 1985, it celebrated its 60th anniversary. It also celebrated the 30th anniversary of its reopening.
The school continued to expand and improve. New buildings were added. These included a gymnasium, a rooftop pool and a new lunchroom.
