In 1942, amidst the shadows of World War II, Osaka City Higashishima Elementary School first opened its doors as Osaka City Higashishima National School. Imagine the scene. A brand new school, built during wartime, a beacon of hope and normalcy in a world consumed by conflict. Here at Higashishima Elementary, children sought refuge in learning, even as air raid sirens wailed in the distance. The school became a vital part of the community. It provided not only education but also a sense of stability during uncertain times. Higashishima Elementary’s early years were marked by the realities of war. In 1944, as the war intensified, the school participated in the student evacuation program, sending children to safer locations in the countryside. This was a desperate measure to protect the city’s youth from the increasing dangers of air raids. Tragically, on June 1, 1945, the second Osaka air raid struck. Higashishima Elementary was not spared. The school building was completely destroyed by fire. The school grounds suffered extensive damage. The destruction of Higashishima Elementary was a devastating blow to the community. It symbolized the immense loss and hardship faced by the people of Osaka during the war. Despite the immense challenges, the spirit of Higashishima Elementary did not break. In 1946, due to the damage from the war, Higashishima National School and another local school were merged with Nakahiro National School. This merger meant the temporary closure of Higashishima Elementary, a painful but necessary decision. However, hope remained alive. As the community began to rebuild, so too did the dream of restoring Higashishima Elementary. In 1954, as a branch of Osaka City Higashishima Elementary School, the school reopened at its original location. This marked a significant milestone in the school’s history. It demonstrated the resilience and determination of the community to provide education for future generations. Finally, on April 1, 1957, Osaka City Higashishima Elementary School was officially re-established as an independent institution, separated from Osaka City Higashishima Elementary. The phoenix had risen from the ashes. Today, Higashishima Elementary stands as a testament to the enduring power of education.
