Let’s delve into the past of Osaka Municipal Higashi Elementary School. It started as the Nineteenth Elementary School in Nishi Ward. Over time the school changed names. It was known as Higashi Joushou Elementary School in the Meiji era. By 1941 it became Higashi National School due to the national school order.
During World War II things changed drastically. As the war worsened, pupils from Osaka were evacuated. This evacuation aimed to protect children from air raids. Children from Higashi National School went to Shimane Prefecture. They stayed in the village of Shinmon now part of Izumo City.
The school buildings suffered greatly in 1945. Air raids destroyed the school. In 1946 after the war, Higashi National School merged with other schools. These were Takadai and Kawa National Schools. Higashi also absorbed the elementary division of Hanazono National School.
In 1947, a new school system emerged. It was then that Osaka Municipal Higashi Elementary School got its current name. In 1950, the old Kawa National School became a branch of Higashi Elementary. But by 1951, Kawa Branch became independent again as Osaka Municipal Kawa Elementary School.
The school’s motto is admirable. It encourages children to be honest strong and bright. This nurturing environment has shaped countless lives. Many graduates continue their studies. Most go on to Osaka Municipal Kawa Junior High School.
