In 1947, amidst the rubble and resilience of post-war Osaka, Osaka City Icioka Junior High School emerged. It was the first new junior high established in the Minato Ward. Imagine Osaka City Icioka Junior High School in its early days, a beacon of hope in a recovering city. The school initially served the entire Minato Ward. As the area’s population grew, the school’s district was divided to establish new schools like Minato Junior High, Minato South Junior High, and Icioka East Junior High. Osaka City Icioka Junior High School stands on land that once housed the Icioka Fifth Elementary School, a casualty of the war. The school’s journey reflects the city’s own rebirth. In 1949, it was renamed Osaka City Icioka Junior High School. A mere year later, Typhoon Jane devastated the school buildings. This forced a temporary closure for a week. The school relocated to its current site in 1951. The school continued to adapt to the changing needs of the community. A branch school was established in 1953. This branch school later became Minato Junior High School in 1954. By 1958, as part of flood prevention measures, the school’s athletic field was elevated. In 1973, another branch was established. It eventually became Icioka East Junior High School in 1974. Osaka City Icioka Junior High School has been a center for Japanese language education for students who need extra support. The school has seen curriculum changes, the introduction of a new uniform, and continues to serve as a vital part of the Minato Ward community. As of 2024, even the school’s attendance zone was adjusted, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the city around it. Osaka City Icioka Junior High School remains a testament to the enduring spirit of Osaka.
