“Can you imagine what it was like to be a student here in 1947?” That’s when Osaka Municipal Omiya Junior High School first opened its doors. It was initially named Osaka Municipal Asahi Second Junior High School. The school was located within Omiya West Elementary School. A branch school was established at Osaka Municipal Ikue Elementary School.
In 1949 a significant change occurred. The school’s name was changed to Osaka Municipal Omiya Junior High School. The current location was established in the same year. The school building was completed and relocation took place.
Osaka Municipal Omiya Junior High School has a rich history. In 1949 a branch school for students with intellectual disabilities was established. It was within Osaka Municipal Morinomiya Elementary School. This branch became independent in 1952. It was renamed Osaka Municipal Morinomiya Junior High School.
The school has been involved in educational research. In 1966 the Osaka City Board of Education designated it. It was a research school for English education and LL. In 1993 the school conducted research. It focused on mathematics education.
The school has expanded over the years. In 1969 a flat-roofed gymnasium was completed. In 1971 a south steel-reinforced school building was added. It had 28 classrooms. In 1992 an elevator was installed. The south side of the west building was completed in 1994. The north side of the west building was completed in 1996. Seismic reinforcement work was carried out on the south building in 2009. Air conditioning was installed in the west building’s regular classrooms in 2012. Air conditioning was installed in the south building’s regular classrooms in 2013. A new pool was completed in 2015.
Many notable people have graduated from Osaka Municipal Omiya Junior High School. They include architect Tadao Ando and talents Tarzan and Yukari Mitsushima. Actress Erena Murakawa, actress Saori Yagi, and boxer Takuya Mutsuka are alumni too. Rugby player Chie Matsui also attended this school.
Osaka Municipal Omiya Junior High School continues to educate students. It serves the communities of Omiya, Ikue, and Shirokita Elementary Schools. It stands as a testament to Osaka’s commitment to education. It has a long history of adapting to the needs of its students.
