Across from the imposing Senpukan, a nationally designated important cultural property, stands Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School. Notice the striking contrast between the historical richness of Senpukan and the modern design of Hokuryo Junior High. This juxtaposition reflects the school’s unique position within the community. Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to the city’s ability to blend the old with the new. The school opened in 1948 as Osaka Municipal Kita Second Junior High School. Just a year later, it was renamed Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School. The name “Hokuryo” combines “Kita,” meaning north, with “Ryo,” symbolizing abundance and strength. This reflects the school’s location in Osaka’s Kita ward and its aspirations for its students. Initially, finding a permanent home for Hokuryo Junior High was a challenge. The school temporarily occupied Sumiyoshi Elementary School while a suitable location was sought. Several names, like Sumiyoshi, Minamimori-cho, and Tenmabashi, were considered but ultimately rejected. Some were deemed too narrow in scope. Others clashed with existing schools. The name “Hokuryo” emerged as the perfect fit. The school finally moved to its current location in 1952. Interestingly, the land upon which Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School stands has a complicated history. The soil revealed high levels of toxic substances, leading to a legal dispute with the neighboring Mitsui Materials. The city of Osaka argued that Mitsui Materials, a chemical manufacturing company, was responsible for the contamination. The battle continued for years, finally reaching a settlement in April 2020. Look closely at the school’s architecture. The lower portion is clad in white brick tiles. The upper portion is finished in clear white over concrete. Notice the green accents, mirroring the colors of the Senpukan’s fixtures and eaves. This design choice consciously connects the school to its historical neighbor. The architects deliberately emphasized horizontal lines in the auditorium, gymnasium, and rooftop pool. This was done to create a human-scale space and reduce the feeling of oppression from surrounding high-rise buildings. Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School is more than bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant learning environment. The school actively engages students through numerous extracurricular activities, including No-Charm Daytime and community exploration. It fosters close relationships with local elementary schools, creating a strong sense of educational continuity within the community.
