In 1924, the Osaka City Yatatoya Elementary School first opened its doors. Originally called Osaka City Yatatoya Island Regular Elementary School, it has seen its share of transformations. Stand here, before Yatatoya Elementary, and imagine those early days. The name changed in 1941, becoming Osaka City Yatatoya National School, reflecting national educational reforms. The Pacific War brought devastation to Osaka’s port area. Yatatoya Elementary wasn’t spared. It temporarily closed, merging with Mitsusaki Elementary. Yet, like the resilient city around it, Yatatoya Elementary was reborn. In 1949, it reopened as a branch of Hanasui Elementary School. Just a year later, in 1950, Yatatoya Elementary regained its independence. It moved to its current location in 1953. Yatatoya Elementary continued to evolve. It played a role in establishing Minatosei Elementary in 1963 and Ikeshima Elementary in 1975. The school song, a source of pride, was composed in 1964. The school buildings have also changed over the years, undergoing various renovations and expansions. From a wooden structure completed in 1936, the school grew to include a steel-reinforced concrete main building, lecture hall, lunchroom, and special classrooms. Even a school pool opened in 1952. Yatatoya Elementary continues to serve its community, educating generations of Osaka’s children.
