Welcome to Osaka Municipal Kamifukushima Elementary School. It stands as a testament to time, change and community spirit in Osaka. Its story began in the Meiji era. This school has evolved through different names and challenges to become what it is today.
Let’s step back to 1874. The school was established as the Third District Third Elementary School, within Osaka Prefecture. This was a time of modernization. Japan was rapidly adopting Western systems. Education was a key focus.
Over the years, the school’s name changed. It reflected administrative changes and local developments. In 1887 it became Kamifukushima Ordinary Elementary School. By 1895, it was known as Mikojima Ordinary Elementary School. Mikojima was a nearby area. The name reflected the local geography.
The late 19th century brought further changes. In 1897, Kamifukushima and Shimofukushima villages were incorporated into Osaka City. The school became Osaka City Mikojima Ordinary Elementary School. However, Toeshima village was not included in this incorporation. Mikojima Elementary continued to accept students from Toeshima.
In 1903, a new school opened. Osaka City Second Kamifukushima Ordinary Elementary School. This is now Osaka City Fukushima Elementary School. Our school then became Osaka City First Kamifukushima Ordinary Elementary School.
The school also had a higher elementary division for a time. However, in 1945, Osaka decided to consolidate these divisions. It integrated them into Osaka Eight National School.
World War II brought destruction. Air raids in 1945 burned the school to the ground. In 1946, it temporarily merged with Fukushima National School now Fukushima Elementary.
The community rebuilt. In 1953, the school reopened as a branch of Fukushima Elementary. Finally, in 1955, it regained its independence. It was renamed Osaka Municipal Kamifukushima Elementary School.
Even after all of this, disaster struck again. In 1961, the school was flooded due to a typhoon. Despite these setbacks, Kamifukushima Elementary School persevered.
Today, Osaka Municipal Kamifukushima Elementary School actively engages with its community. The school emphasizes local collaboration. It conducts activities with senior citizen groups and kindergartens. Students also participate in local park cleanups. In February, the school hosts school council meetings. These meetings include parents. The school also provides meals. It teaches about nutrition.
