Was it more than a century ago that the first students walked through the doors of what is now Osaka Municipal Sangenya Higashi Elementary School? This school has a rich history. It has overcome many challenges. Today we will explore the story of Osaka Municipal Sangenya Higashi Elementary School.
The school’s story began in 1875. It was initially named the Third Daigaku-ku Osaka-fu Kanai Third Chugaku-ku Dairoku Elementary School. This translates to the Sixth Elementary School of the Third Middle School District. It was located in Sangenya Village. This area is now part of the Taisho Ward.
Over the years, the school’s name changed several times. In 1887, it became Sangenya Jinjo Elementary School. Then in 1897, Osaka City annexed the area. The school became Osaka City Sangenya Jinjo Higher Elementary School.
In 1901, the higher elementary division was separated. It became the newly established Sangenya Higher Elementary School. The original school then became Osaka City Sangenya Jinjo Elementary School.
The school began co-ed classes in 1923. Before this, the first school was for boys. The second school was for girls.
As the number of students increased, a third elementary school was built in 1916. It was named Osaka City Sangenya Third Jinjo Elementary School. Today, it is Osaka Municipal Sangenya Nishi Elementary School.
In 1941, the school’s name changed again. It became Sangenya Higashi National School. This change reflected a broader shift in naming conventions. Schools were now named after their location within the area.
During World War II, things became difficult. In 1944, students were evacuated. Children from Sangenya Higashi National School were sent to Tokushima Prefecture. They lived in Mashiki and Nishiue Village.
In 1945, disaster struck. The school buildings were destroyed in the Great Osaka Air Raid. In 1946, the school was temporarily closed. It merged with Sangenya Nishi National School.
After the war, the community rebuilt. In 1958, Osaka Municipal Sangenya Higashi Elementary School reopened. It stands as a testament to the resilience. It shows the dedication to education of the people of Osaka.
Today, Osaka Municipal Sangenya Higashi Elementary School continues. It provides education to the children of the area. It carries the torch of its long and storied past. It is a proud landmark in the community. Its graduates proceed to Osaka Municipal Taisho Higashi Junior High School. The school also participates in ongoing learning and development. In 1999, the Osaka Municipal Board of Education designated it as a language research school.
