In 2021, these schools merged. This created the new 大阪市立まつば小学校. The location of the new school is on the grounds of the former Umeda Kitatsuto Elementary.
Matsunomiya Elementary School has its own rich history. It was originally established in 1927 as Osaka Municipal Imamiya No. 6 Ordinary Elementary School. Over the years it underwent several name changes. In 1941 it became Osaka Municipal Matsunomiya National School. Then in 1947 it was renamed Osaka Municipal Matsunomiya Elementary School.
However declining birth rates impacted the region. This led to a decline in the number of children. The Osaka City School Proper Placement Council suggested consolidation. Small-scale schools can face challenges. These include fixed interpersonal relationships among students. They also include limited teacher allocation.
Matsunomiya Elementary School was identified for reorganization. It was to be integrated with a nearby school. That school was Umeda Kitatsuto Elementary School.
After discussions with the local community the decision was made. In 2021 Matsunomiya Elementary School and Umeda Kitatsuto Elementary School were to be reconfigured. The new 大阪市立まつば小学校 would be established on the site of the latter.
To ease the transition measures were taken. These included improving the commute from the Matsunomiya area to the new school. It also included creating opportunities for interaction between students.
In May 2020 the Osaka City Council approved the ordinance. It merged Umeda Kitatsuto Elementary School and Matsunomiya Elementary School. On April 1 2021 大阪市立まつば小学校 was established.
Matsunomiya Elementary School closed on March 31 2021. The name Matsunomiya has an interesting origin. It comes from the Matsunomiya Shrine in the local area. During the reorganization students from the Matsunomiya area were provided with new routes to 大阪市立まつば小学校.
