A silent sentinel stands before us. This is the Osaka City Minami High School Stele. Its weathered surface tells a story of resilience and loss.

The stele commemorates Minami High School. This school existed long ago in this very spot. It wasn’t always known as Minami High School. Its name changed over the years reflecting its history. First established in 1872 it was initially called South Daiichi District Elementary School. Later it became South District Minami Elementary School. Then in 1941 it became Minami Elementary School.

The Great Osaka Air Raid in 1945 tragically destroyed the school building. The school was completely incinerated. Imagine the devastation. The children the teachers. All gone in a flash of fire. This event indelibly marked the school’s history.

One year later Minami Elementary School merged with Osaka City Daikoku National School. It finally closed in 1945. This stele was erected in October 1988 to remember the school. It stands as a poignant reminder of what was lost.

Look closely. You can see faint traces of the school song carved into the stone. The inscription is barely visible now. It’s a testament to time’s relentless march. It serves as a bittersweet reminder of the school’s vibrant past.

The stele’s inscription reads “Osaka City Minami High School Stele”. It tells a complex tale of a school’s enduring spirit. It also speaks of the devastating impact of war. This modest monument silently bears witness to a chapter in Osaka’s history. It’s a history of both triumph and tragedy. It’s a history we must never forget.
