“How did this all start?” Imagine religious services first held in a borrowed house. Now you stand before the 大阪キリスト教会. This church has a rich history. It began with missionaries and a small group of believers.
The 大阪キリスト教会 started in 1879. American missionaries A.D. Hail and J.B. Hail established it. Early members gathered in a house in Nanjouchi. They called it “First Japan Cumberland Church.” It was also known as “Horie Church”.
In 1884, the church built a formal meeting place. It was in Aburasato. The name changed to “Osaka First Presbyterian Church”. Then, in 1890, something significant happened. Nine churches joined the Church of Christ in Japan. This led to another name change. It became “Osaka West Church of the Church of Christ in Japan.”
The 大阪キリu30b9u30c8u6559u4f1a continued to evolve. In 1920, a new church building was constructed. It stood on Aburasato Street.
During World War II in 1941, the church changed its name again. It became “Osaka West Church of the Japan Christian Group.” This reflected wartime religious policies. In 1943, it merged with the Yasui River Church. Sadly, in 1945, disaster struck. Bombing destroyed the church building. Everything was lost including its library.
After the war, the church rebuilt. In 1951, it joined the new Church of Christ in Japan. This split from the Japan Christian Group. In 1952, the Yasui River Church separated. It became independent again. The 大阪キu30eau30b9u30c8u6559u4f1a continued to grow.
A new church building was erected in 1950. Then in 1958, a new concrete building was constructed. More construction in 1965 completed the current structure. The church separated from the Yasui River Church. It then moved and changed its name. Today, it is known as Kitatatsumi Church.
