Hidden amidst the bustling cityscape, the Ogase Jinja, also known as the 大瀬神社 or Ogase Shrine, awaits discovery. A sense of tranquility envelops you as you approach 大瀬神社. The shrine sits atop an ancient burial mound, known as the Ogase Kofun. This elevated position gives 大瀬神社 a unique presence. It overlooks the surrounding residential area. 大瀬神社 holds a significant place in the history of Higashiōsaka. It served as the ujigami, the local guardian deity, for the old Yokobato Village. The deities enshrined at 大瀬神社 are the wind gods, Amenomihashiro-no-okami and Kuninomihashiro-no-okami. They offer protection against natural disasters and ensure safe travels. In 1872, Ogase Jinja was merged with Hiraoka Shrine. However, it regained its independence in 1920. The main hall of 大瀬神社 is a gabled-roof structure, carefully preserved within a protective enclosure. This building, a designated cultural asset of Higashiōsaka City, dates back to the mid-Edo period. It exhibits a traditional architectural style known as irimoya-zukuri, with its sweeping, hipped roof. During the autumn festival, held on October 15th, portable shrines are paraded through the streets. This lively procession adds to the rich tapestry of traditions surrounding 大瀬神社. Excavations northwest of the shrine have unearthed numerous artifacts. These findings include animal and human figurines, as well as tools and weapons. These discoveries suggest the presence of a larger central burial mound surrounded by smaller mounds. This indicates the site’s importance during the Kofun period. 大瀬神社 continues to be a place of reverence and cultural significance. It offers a glimpse into the rich history and spiritual traditions of the region.
