A traffic bottleneck. That’s the first thing that might come to mind when you see 大梅沙收费站.

Let me tell you about this place. The 大梅沙收费站 has a history tied to Shenzhen’s rapid growth. It also reflects the challenges of balancing progress with the needs of its residents.

During holidays, traffic congestion in Shenzhen’s eastern area often sparked debate. The location of 大梅沙收费站 became particularly awkward. Cars would often get heavily delayed at 大梅沙收费站. Vehicles entering and exiting the highway sometimes formed a long queue. This severely impacted traffic flow.

Imagine this queue snaking back. It stretched to the eastern coastal highway’s Linyin Tunnel section. After passing through 大梅沙收费站, the road would finally be clear.

Shenzhen had already canceled fees on the Shenzhen section of the Yantian Expressway in February 2016. Because of that move, calls arose to demolish 大梅沙收费站. The Shenzhen Municipal Transportation Public Facilities Construction Center addressed this. They were working on the Huizhou-Shenzhen boundary at the Kengguang main line toll station. The plan was to complete civil construction by the end of June 2018. Then, they would proceed with electromechanical and other related works.

Once the Kengguang toll station was operational, the original toll stations on the Yantian Expressway including 大梅沙收费站 could finally be removed. This demolition would definitely benefit eastern Shenzhen’s traffic.

Besides easing traffic with the removal of 大梅沙收费站, there were other improvements. The Shenzhen Metro Line 8 was under construction. The second phase of Line 8 used an underground layout. It extended to Xiaomeisha. This offered more convenience for residents. The biggest impact? People could finally use rail transport to reach the eastern scenic areas. By now, Line 8 phase two exploration work is complete.

In the “Yantian District 2018 Major Project Plan,” other developments were underway. The Meisha Passenger Terminal planned completion was expected in 2019. Also, the Dameisha Transport Hub was scheduled for completion in 2022. The hub planned to have about 2,700 parking spaces. These projects and Metro Line 8 would make travel to eastern Yantian more convenient.

Of course, traffic police restrictions existed. They had congestion issues. 大梅沙收费站’s story reflects Shenzhen’s commitment to improvement. It also highlights its effort to address urban challenges. The city is always striving to create a better experience for everyone.
