Myōshin-ji: Whispers of Emperors and Dragons. Here, at Myōshin-ji, time seems to fold in on itself, blending centuries of history into the present moment. Myōshin-ji isn’t just one temple, but a sprawling complex of nearly fifty sub-temples. It’s a place where emperors traded crowns for robes and where the whispers of ancient Zen teachings still echo. Myōshin-ji began not as a temple, but as an imperial villa belonging to Emperor Hanazono. In 1337, he abdicated his throne, not for a life of leisure, but for one of spiritual pursuit. He transformed his villa into a Zen temple, the very Myōshin-ji we stand before today. It became the head temple of the Myōshin-ji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. This school boasts over 3000 affiliated temples, making Myōshin-ji a significant hub of Zen practice. While many sub-temples remain private, the paths that wind through the complex invite exploration. You can almost sense the footsteps of generations of monks who walked these same stones. One of Myōshin-ji’s most remarkable treasures lies within the Hatto Hall: the “Cloud Dragon Painting”. This massive artwork, spanning twelve meters, took artist Kanō Tan’yū eight years to create. The dragon’s gaze follows you from every angle, a powerful reminder of the temple’s spiritual depth. Another hidden gem is the Akechiburo bathhouse, a wooden structure where monks once meditated in steam and darkness. This bathhouse is named after Akechi Mitsuhide, the warlord who betrayed Oda Nobunaga, and who sought refuge at Myōshin-ji shortly before his own demise. While exploring the complex, consider visiting Taizo-in, one of the oldest sub-temples. Its gardens offer a serene escape, featuring a beautiful pond garden from the mid-1960s and a rock garden designed in the 1400s by the famous painter Kano Motonobu. As you leave Myōshin-ji, carry with you not just the sights and sounds of this remarkable place, but also the quiet strength of its history, a testament to the enduring power of Zen.
