Was it Emperor Xuanzong’s refuge or Master Xuanzang’s enlightenment? Daci Temple stands as a testament to both. This Chengdu temple offers a journey through time. Its story weaves through dynasties and significant historical events.

Daci Temple. Its name means “Temple of Infinite Compassion and Mercy”. It is a serene escape amidst Chengdu’s urban landscape. The temple’s origins trace back to the Wei and Jin dynasties.

Legend says that the Indian monk Baozhang came to Sichuan. He wished to worship Samantabhadra. Baozhang then lived in Daci Temple.

Fast forward to the Tang Dynasty. The eminent monk Xuanzang received his full ordination here in 622 AD. He spent four to five years at Daci Temple expounding Buddhism sutras. Xuanzang frequently gave sermons here. His presence forever marked Daci Temple as a center of Buddhist learning.

In 756 AD, a major upheaval shook the Tang Dynasty. An Lushan seized Chang’an, the capital city. Emperor Xuanzong fled to Chengdu. Seeing the monks of Daci Temple feeding the poor touched him deeply. He honored the temple with the name “Dashengci Temple”. Emperor Xuanzong then ordered its reconstruction.

But Daci Temple’s story isn’t without its challenges. Emperor Wuzong ordered the demolition of Buddhist temples in 845 AD. But Daci Temple was spared because it had Emperor Xuanzong’s handwriting. It became the only Buddhist temple in the area.

Centuries later in 1435, disaster struck. A fire destroyed most of Daci Temple’s buildings. The temple was reconstructed during the Qing Dynasty. It was renovated in 1867.

In 2003, Daci Temple underwent restoration. It reopened to the public on April 8, 2004. Today, Daci Temple stands as a cultural heritage site.

The Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu complex surrounds the temple since 2015. It blends traditional Sichuan architecture with modern development.

Visiting Daci Temple offers more than just historical insights. The temple is open from 8:00 to 17:30. For just CNY3 you can enter a world of tranquility.

Daci Temple is located on Dacisi Road in the center of Chengdu. Nearby is Chunxi Road.

Daci Temple stands as a reminder of resilience. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. From Xuanzang’s ordination to Emperor Xuanzong’s refuge, Daci Temple embodies compassion. Its story continues to evolve.
