“Where exactly is it?” I hear you ask about Omiya Kobashi. Omiya Kobashi is a bridge in Osaka. It is located in Omiya 1-chome, Asahi-ku, Osaka City. You can reach Omiya Kobashi from the exit 4 of the Shorin Omiya Station. It is about a 6 minute walk from there.

Let’s take a closer look at Omiya Kobashi. It is more than just a way to cross. It connects people and places.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much historical information about Omiya Kobashi. However I can talk about another bridge. It is the Hommachibashi Bridge. It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered its construction. This was during the building of Osaka Castle. The Higashiyokobori River was also excavated at the time.

Hommachibashi Bridge is the oldest bridge still in use in Osaka. Records show that in 1787 it was a wooden bridge. It was approximately 54 meters long and 5.9 meters wide. During the Edo period the shogunate directly controlled it. The bridge played a vital role. It connected Osaka Castle and Funabashi. The Nishimachi Magistrate’s Office was nearby. It was on the northeast side of the bridgehead. This made it an important administrative center.

The current Hommachibashi Bridge dates back to 1923. It was rebuilt when Hommachi was widened. This widening was to accommodate a streetcar road. It has a strong structure. It features three steel arches. These arches are supported by stone piers. Repairs and beautification work were carried out for three years. This started in 1979. The reason was corrosion in various parts of the bridge.

As you explore Omiya Kobashi remember its role. It provides access to other spots. It connects neighborhoods. It offers a unique perspective on Osaka.
