“Did someone say Myōon Akiyoshi built this temple?” Daimyoji Temple. A sense of peace surrounds this ancient Buddhist sanctuary. Established in 1340 by Myōon Akiyoshi, a prominent figure of the Nanzen-ji Temple lineage. Daimyoji Temple originally flourished as one of the twenty-one grand temples of the Rinzai sect. Disaster struck in 1536. The temple was engulfed in flames during the Tenbun Hokke Rebellion. Yet from the ashes, it was reborn. The great warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, instrumental in unifying Japan, ordered its reconstruction. This time, Daimyoji Temple was nestled within the sacred grounds of Myōhōji Temple. In 1991 Daimyoji Temple embarked on a new chapter. It was carefully relocated to its present location in Hanazono. Here it stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring power of faith. Daimyoji Temple invites you to experience its tranquility and contemplate the ebb and flow of history. Each stone, each beam whispers tales of destruction and renewal.
