Lost in time, the grandeur of the 大仏殿跡緑地 Stele silently recalls a forgotten era. Here, amidst the bustling city of Kyoto, echoes of colossal structures and tragic fires linger. The 大仏殿跡緑地 Stele marks the site where once stood the mightiest wooden structure in Japan, the Great Buddha Hall of Hōkō-ji Temple, also known as Kyoto Daibutsu. Envisioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1586, this hall aimed to surpass Nara’s Todai-ji Temple in both scale and splendor.

Hideyoshi, having unified Japan, sought a monument to solidify his power. The Great Buddha, a wooden statue reaching nearly 19 meters, would be the centerpiece. It was housed within an enormous hall, measuring approximately 88 meters north to south and 55 meters east to west. Supported by 92 massive pillars, the hall dwarfed all other buildings in Kyoto. It even rivaled China’s largest wooden structure, the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing’s Forbidden City. The first hall was completed in 1595. Sadly, it fell victim to an accidental fire in 1603 during bronze casting work within the structure.

Hideyori, Hideyoshi’s son, ordered the Great Buddha’s reconstruction. The second hall, also immense, was completed in 1612. This time, composite wood pillars reinforced with iron rings were used. Unfortunately, a disastrous earthquake in 1662 damaged the statue and hall. This led to the construction of a third wooden Great Buddha. The third hall was eventually completed in 1667. Tragedy struck again in 1798 when lightning ignited the hall. Both the third Great Buddha and the second hall were consumed by flames. The stone pedestal of the Great Buddha was unearthed during archaeological excavations in 2000. It was rediscovered amidst other structural remnants, now marked by stone slabs.

A smaller, fourth wooden Great Buddha statue, around 14 meters tall, was later donated. A temporary housing was built for it. This statue and hall were also destroyed, this time by fire in 1973, attributed to a faulty brazier. The 大仏殿跡緑地 Stele, surrounded by fragments of its enormous stone walls, stands as a quiet testament to this tumultuous history. It reminds us of the fleeting nature of even the most ambitious creations. The site is a poignant reminder of Kyoto’s rich past. Here, grand monuments rose and fell, only to become whispers carried on the wind.
