Feel the cool stone beneath your fingertips. This is the Sotojima Hospital Memorial Stone. It stands as a somber reminder. A testament to a tragedy that unfolded here nearly a century ago.

The Sotojima Hospital opened in 1909. It was a significant public health facility. It served a large population. Initially it was built on low-lying land. The location proved problematic. The hospital was frequently damaged by flooding. This prompted discussions about relocation. However local residents strongly resisted the move. The relocation plan was ultimately abandoned.

Expansion work continued at the existing site. Then disaster struck. On September 21 1934 a typhoon ravaged the city. The hospital suffered catastrophic damage. The resulting collapse killed 196 people. This included 173 inpatients. Three staff members also perished along with eleven family members. Nine others involved in hospital expansion work died that day. The destruction was so complete rebuilding was deemed impossible.

The hospital was relocated to Nagahama in Wakayama Prefecture. It reopened in 1938 as the Koyoen National Sanatorium. This memorial stone however remained. It marks the original site. It commemorates the lives lost in the devastating typhoon.

The stone itself is unassuming. Its inscription details the hospital’s founding. It also recalls the tragic events of 1934. It’s a quiet place of reflection. It’s a place where you can pause. You can contemplate the resilience of the human spirit. The strength of those who lived through unimaginable loss.

Each September a memorial service is held here. Relatives of the victims gather. They pay their respects. They remember the lives lost at the Sotojima Hospital. The Sotojima Hospital Memorial Stone is a poignant reminder. It’s a reminder of the fragility of life. It’s also a testament to the enduring power of remembrance.
