Selayang Buddhist Association started with a simple act of compassion. More than 2,500 years ago, a beacon of light ignited in Bodh Gaya, India. It illuminated hearts and minds. That same light found its way to Selayang in 1986. Selayang, located in the north of Genting Highlands, became a hub for Buddhist devotees. Every morning, fresh produce from the Cameron Highlands would arrive at the Selayang wholesale market. Among the bustling traders, a group of Buddhist women worked tirelessly. For 15 years, these dedicated women from the Selayang Buddhist Association showcased their culinary skills. They prepared and sold vegetarian delicacies at three nearby markets. Their efforts raised funds, ultimately leading to the construction of the current three-story building. This building serves as a center for Buddhist activities in the area and beyond. The Selayang Buddhist Association traces its roots back to 1983. A man, deeply affected by his father’s passing, sought solace in Buddhist scriptures. He found peace and began his journey into Buddhism. Through Venerable Hu Jing, he met Ms. Lin Xiuyin, a fellow Buddhist. Ms. Lin began teaching Buddhist scriptures to a small group in a wooden house in Selayang. This marked the beginning of the Selayang Buddhist Association. Initially, the association had no funds. The thirty to forty members contributed RM10 each month to cover basic expenses. Three years later, with a growing membership, they formalized their registration under the guidance of Venerable Hong Zufen. They used the address of a nearby temple for registration to avoid any legal issues. As the association expanded, their activities increased. The original location along Selayang New Village Main Road became too small. In 1996, they moved to their current, self-owned premises. The three-story building houses a main hall, a library, classrooms, and a kindergarten. It was funded by a dedicated monthly donation program, started in 1983. The vegetarian food sales, initiated in 1986, continue to this day. These two fundraising initiatives, along with some private donations, made the new building a reality. Since its official registration, Selayang Buddhist Association has adhered to a principle. They avoid using fundraising as the primary means of supporting their activities. Like many other Buddhist associations, they focus on Buddhist teachings of compassion and wisdom. They actively engage the community in Selayang. They work to promote Buddhism and its positive influence on society. They organize various activities including Dharma talks, meditation retreats, and welfare programs. They also conduct regular activities in Mandarin, such as chanting sessions, Dharma classes, and children’s programs. Today, Selayang Buddhist Association’s facilities are often used by external groups for Buddhist activities. They even lend their vehicle to Universiti Malaya Buddhist Society. They collaborate with both the Malaysian Buddhist Association and the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia. Selayang Buddhist Association is a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of Buddhist teachings.
