“Have you heard the tale of the wandering monk and the lost temple?” I ask, gesturing toward the unassuming facade of Hokokuzan Saimyoji. This is a temple with a story etched in every stone.

Welcome to Hokokuzan Saimyoji. It is often called “Doutoku-san no Otera” by locals. Saimyoji Temple may seem modest today, but its past is interwoven with Kyoto’s ever-changing tapestry.

The temple’s origins trace back to Doutoku Oka. He was a devoted disciple of Rennyo Shonin. Rennyo Shonin revitalized the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist sect. Doutoku founded the temple.

Legend says Doutoku traveled this region centuries ago. He sought a place to spread the Jodo Shinshu teachings. Hokokuzan Saimyoji was established on this very site.

The temple’s main hall was rebuilt in 1992. But don’t let its modern facade fool you. The spirit of centuries past lives on within these walls.

Inside the temple grounds, you can find the “Rennyo Shonin Onkoshikake Stone.” This stone marks the spot where Rennyo Shonin once rested. This stone links Saimyoji to the roots of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.

Saimyoji is also home to the Senki Mangoku Tenmangu. It is also called Saimyoji Tenmangu. This small shrine within the temple honors Sugawara no Michizane. He was a scholar and poet. The shrine is said to bring blessings of academic success. The enshrined picture is believed to show Sugawara no Michizane’s delight.

Hokokuzan Saimyoji endured many trials through history. It was once much larger. Sadly, much of its land was lost due to modernization projects. Despite these challenges, the temple persevered.

Look closely at the Amida Buddha statue. It is said to have been created by Kaikei. It is a significant cultural property of Kyoto City. The statue’s halo has plum blossom patterns.

The “Buddha Nirvana Painting” is another treasure. It was created in the late Heian period. Believers funded its costly restoration.

Today, Hokokuzan Saimyoji stands as a testament to resilience. It is a reminder that even small temples can hold great significance.

As you leave Hokokuzan Saimyoji, remember the story of Doutoku Oka. Think about the temple’s journey through time. Take a piece of its quiet strength with you. Perhaps you’ll also find a bit of peace on your own path.
