Horikoshi Shrine, also known as one of the Seven Shrines of Shitennoji Temple, holds a captivating tale. Legend says Prince Shotoku built this shrine on Mount Chausu. It was a memorial to his uncle, Emperor Sushun, the 32nd emperor of Japan. Horikoshi Shrine’s name is intertwined with a now-vanished moat. This moat once graced the south side of Shitennoji Temple. Visitors would cross this “horikoshi” (moat crossing) to reach the temple grounds. This gave the shrine its unique name. Horikoshi Shrine isn’t just a place of historical significance. It’s also a place of local lore. Osakans believe that Horikoshi-san, the deity enshrined here, grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes. This belief has woven itself into the fabric of the community.
