“A school with a past name?” That’s right. We are standing before what was once known as Kyoto Prefectural Joyo School for the Mentally Challenged. Today it is called Kyoto Prefectural Joyo Support School. It is a public special support school in Joyo City Kyoto. It caters to students with mild intellectual disabilities. The school also has courses for students admitted to the National Hospital Organization. This includes Minami Kyoto Hospital. These students often suffer from severe mental and physical disabilities.

The school’s history dates back to August 1 1985. It was then when the preparatory office for the Kyoto Prefectural New School for the Mentally Challenged was opened. It was located within the National Sanatorium Minami Kyoto Hospital.

In October of the same year the establishment of Kyoto Prefectural Joyo School for the Mentally Challenged was established. Then in November the departments and courses of Kyoto Prefectural Joyo School for the Mentally Challenged were set up.

The school officially opened on April 1 1986. At first it consisted of two departments. These were the Department of Care Education and the Department of Special Needs Education. The first entrance ceremony was held shortly after. At that time the school had 107 students and 51 staff members.

Over the years Kyoto Prefectural Joyo School for the Mentally Challenged expanded. In 1988 a course for commuting senior high school students was established. Construction continued to improve the school’s facilities. This included a playground special classrooms and a gymnasium.

In April 2011 the school changed its name. It became Kyoto Prefectural Joyo Support School. This reflected a shift towards providing broader support for students with special needs.

The alumni association was established in 2007. It aims to promote interaction among graduates. They also want to foster friendship. The association organizes events. These events create a vibrant community for former students.

Kyoto Prefectural Joyo Support School continues to evolve. It responds to the changing needs of its students. It offers various support services. This includes career guidance and life skills training.

The school has received recognition for its educational practices. It was honored for its work with multimedia-based supplementary instruction. The school’s computer club has also won awards. They got it for their work in environmental conservation.

Kyoto Prefectural Joyo Support School remains committed to its mission. It wants to empower students with disabilities. They strive to help them become independent contributing members of society.
