Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Kawasaki Bridge. A graceful cable-stayed bridge it spans the Okawa River. It connects Tenma in Kita Ward and Ajima-cho in Miyakojima Ward.

Before this elegant structure stood a ferry. Imagine the scene in the Edo period. People and goods traversed the river on simple boats. Near this spot stood Kawasaki Toshogu Shrine. The shrine honors Ieyasu Tokugawa. There was also a rice storehouse and the magistrate’s residence.

A private bridge replaced the ferry in 1877. A toll of 3 rin per person was charged. That’s why it was called “Zenitori Bridge”. But disaster struck in 1885. A great flood washed the bridge away.

The Kawasaki Bridge we see today is a marvel of engineering. Built in 1976 it’s part of a vast bicycle path. This path links Nakanoshima Park and Senri Expo Park. The bridge is 129.2 meters long and 3 meters wide. Its design is remarkable. The cables stretch from a tall tower. Girders are suspended between the cables. This ingenious design reduces vibration. It also harmonizes with the park’s beauty.

The bridge is more than just a path. It’s a vital link between communities. It’s a place where people gather. Spring brings the Mint Cherry Blossom Festival. Summer features the Tenjin Festival Funatogyo. The Kawasaki Bridge is witness to these vibrant celebrations. It’s a symbol of Osaka’s rich history and its modern spirit. A perfect blend of the old and the new. A true testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. A beautiful and functional bridge. A place where history and modernity meet.
