Traffic slows. Imagine this scene the snaking queue of vehicles inching closer to the Gangguang Toll Station. Opened in June 2021 this station is more than just a point of passage. It marks entry into a region rich with history and natural beauty.
The Gangguang Toll Station stands as the gateway to the Gangguang area. This area is on the northeastern part of the Dapeng Peninsula. It is the ending point of the Yanba高速. It is 45km from the city center. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the area faces the sea.
Before this modern infrastructure, this land was different. It was once a small fishing village. Salt production was a major industry here. This area marks the origin of the earliest communist organizations in Shenzhen’s history. This is quite a transformation.
In 2013, the Shenzhen Municipal Government designated Gangguang as “Shenzhen International Bio Valley”. The goal was to transform and modernize the area. This involved significant ecological and infrastructural projects.
The area around Gangguang boasts rich ecological resources. Lush mountains surround it. The coastline offers beautiful bays. Expansive mangrove forests thrive along the shore. Flocks of egrets find sanctuary here. The area also features unique volcanic rock formations. Islands and sandy beaches dot the landscape. Ancient forests add to the natural splendor.
However rapid development began to encroach. It excessively fragmented the natural terrain. To counter this, a plan was put in place. The aim was to manage the area’s water resources. Flood prevention became a priority. This involved constructing flood discharge projects.
These projects included river management and upstream flood control. They included seawall protection and rainwater utilization. Ecological restoration was key. Over 12 kilometers of rivers were managed. Over 12 kilometers of new seawalls were built.
One notable project is the Baisha Bay Stream. It closely neighbours Baisha Bay Park. Engineers enhanced the stream. They created a network of waterways. This created ecological islands and natural waterfalls. These efforts combine mountains islands rivers and sea.
Another project is the Xin’gang River. This project created an urban water park. It features natural wetlands and cascading waterfalls. The aim was to purify the water. People can stroll relax and enjoy the scenery.
The Dageng Canal is also nearby. It uses a natural ecological design. The main canal focuses on flood prevention. The design includes shallow streams and tidal pools. Viewing platforms allow people to enjoy the scenery. The side canal emphasizes ecological leisure.
Today the Gangguang area has been revitalized. It offers improved flood control. It has become a destination for leisure and recreation.
