“Jizo-sama, they call him,” the old woman whispered, her voice barely audible above the city’s murmur. We stood before a small, unassuming stone figure. It was 地蔵尊, a Jizo statue. It seemed almost swallowed by the bustling streets of Kyoto. Jizo, she explained, is a protector. He is a guardian of children, especially those lost too soon. The woman pointed to a faded red bib draped around the statue’s neck. Red, the color of protection against demons and illness. Parents offer these bibs, she said, as thanks for Jizo’s care or as pleas for his protection. The woman’s weathered hand reached out, gently straightening the bib. She murmured a silent prayer, her face a canvas of quiet grief. I later learned about the Mizuko Kuyo ceremony. It’s a poignant ritual for parents who have lost children before their time. They dress stone Jizo statues in tiny clothes, transforming them into poignant symbols of love and loss. And so, Jizo stands watch over Kyoto, a silent sentinel offering solace to the grieving and hope to the heartbroken. He reminds us that even in the face of unimaginable loss, compassion and love endure.
